ITINERARY
Day 1: Cusco – Aguas Calientes.
The tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel according to your selected train schedule. The train can depart directly from Cusco to Machu Picchu (subject to availability) or from Ollantaytambo.
During the journey, enjoy panoramic views of open plains, lush jungle vegetation as you descend, and the Urubamba River as you head towards Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo). The trip takes approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, a representative from Ausangate Adventure will be waiting to escort you to your hotel.
The afternoon is free for you to explore Aguas Calientes at your own pace. This charming town, nestled in a beautiful valley, offers cafes, hot springs, and more for you to enjoy during your free time. You might also visit the local artisan market, where you'll find unique souvenirs and crafts. For a deeper dive into Inca history, the Museum provides fascinating archaeological and cultural exhibits. If you prefer a natural stroll, the Mandor Botanical Garden is an excellent choice, surrounded by waterfalls and local flora. Each activity adds a unique perspective to your experience.
Later in the day, your guide will contact you to coordinate the next day's tour.
Day 2: Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco.
This is the most anticipated day. Depending on your Machu Picchu entry time, you will take a bus for approximately 30 minutes to the site. Upon arrival at the Historical Sanctuary, you will begin a guided tour of the citadel's key areas, following your chosen circuit. The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, during which you'll learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.
If you book tickets in advance, you may opt to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, both of which offer breathtaking views of the entire citadel.
After the tour, return to Aguas Calientes, where you'll have free time for lunch.
You will then head to the train station for your return trip from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (remember to arrive 30 minutes before your train's departure). Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, you'll take a bus back to Cusco, where a driver will be waiting at San Pedro Station, Wanchaq Station, or Av. El Sol 843 to transport you to your hotel.
Important Note: Train departures from Cusco are generally available from May to December. During the rainy season (January to April), train departures are typically from Ollantaytambo. If applicable, transportation from Cusco to Ollantaytambo is included. Our team will confirm your departure details before your trip.

During this 2-day tour to Machu Picchu, you will primarily travel by train and bus. It’s recommended to travel light, carrying only a small carry-on bag and a comfortable daypack.

Machu Picchu Tour by train Travel Information
Client Pick-Up.
Ausangate Adventure can pick you up from your hotel as long as it is located in Cusco's Historic Center. The pick-up time will depend on your train schedule and entry time to Machu Picchu. Please note that the waiting time may vary. Cusco's narrow, cobblestone streets can make direct access to your hotel difficult; if this is the case, your guide will provide you with the designated meeting point.
Luggage Storage.
You can safely leave any additional luggage in Cusco at your hotel while you go on the trek. It’s important to ensure that your bags are clearly labeled for easy identification.
Altitude.
As soon as people book their trip to Peru, especially to Cusco, they start worrying about altitude sickness. At high altitudes, the air contains less oxygen than at sea level, forcing your body to work harder to get the necessary oxygen. After several days at altitude, your body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air.
Altitude sickness can make you feel like you have the flu or a hangover. You may experience headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and difficulty breathing during exercise. If these symptoms worsen, contact our office, and we will help you reach a doctor.
Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend that you adjust to physical activity slowly, allowing your body to acclimate. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. Coca leaves contain alkaloids that help carry oxygen in the blood, helping your body mitigate the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid consuming large amounts of alcohol and coffee, as they increase urination frequency and can dehydrate you. Avoid smoking, as it impairs oxygen absorption, and avoid sleeping pills because they can cause shallow breathing at night, making it difficult to absorb oxygen while you sleep.
It is important to consult your doctor before traveling to determine which medications can help prevent altitude sickness. Begin taking the medication two days before reaching high altitudes and continue taking it while you are at elevation.
Weather.
The weather can be highly unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco runs from April to October, but that doesn’t mean it won’t rain in June or that there won’t be sunshine in December. You just need to be prepared. Regardless of the month you plan to hike, make sure to bring waterproof gear, including a rain jacket, waterproof pants, a poncho, and waterproof gloves.
Additionally, be ready for all four seasons. Many treks through the Andes pass through various microclimates, so you should be prepared for any kind of weather. Layering is essential, as it allows you to adjust easily to different temperatures. Nights will always be cold, so be sure to bring a warm winter jacket.
