AUSANGATE
The Ausangate Trek 2 Days is a short but intense adventure, perfect for those looking to explore the most stunning landscapes of the Andes in a limited time. During this hike, you’ll traverse valleys surrounded by towering mountains, glaciers, and turquoise lakes while immersing yourself in the culture of local communities. Additionally, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,384 m.a.s.l.), considered a sacred peak by Andean people. This trek is ideal for travelers in good physical condition who seek an authentic and challenging experience in nature.
We will pick you up at your hotel or Airbnb at 5:00 am. In our private transportation to start this adventure toward the Ausangate snow-capped mountain, we head along the interoceanic highway to the small village of Pukarumi at 4,000 m / 13,123 feet, located in the heart of the Ausangate mountains. Upon arriving in Pukarumi, our breakfast prepared by the high-altitude chef will be ready, and we will also meet our trekking team, which includes cooks and muleteers for this Andean experience.
From Pukarumi, we begin the hike toward the Ausangate snow-capped mountain, passing through the landscapes and the Ausangate community. During the hike, we can see guinea pig farms where they live in large numbers, their breeding, and the cultivation of high-altitude and native potatoes; the guide will explain the importance of the activities carried out by the inhabitants within the community. Then we continue along the path and reach the main viewpoint of Ausangate (Antacalle). From the viewpoint, we can observe the chain of mountains and glaciers that surround the Ausangate snow-capped peak. Halfway along the path, we will stop to enjoy lunch.
After lunch, we continue along the path and will be in front of the imposing Ausangate snow-capped mountain, face to face, achieving spectacular views, and we will arrive at the Blue Lake (Azulqocha) camp at 4,600 m / 15,092 ft. We will have tea ready in the afternoon before dinner. Then, I'll prepare dinner; we'll spend the night inside the tent under the protection of the Ausangate mountains, surrounded by nature and tranquility.
Wake up with the sunrise of Ausangate and enjoy a delicious and energizing breakfast. After breakfast, we start on the trail, exploring and visiting the 7 lagoons of Ausangate; then we ascend to the viewpoint of the 7 lagoons of Ausangate, taking photographs and enjoying impressive views of the mountains, and continue to the Ninaparayoq pass; from this place, we can observe the Khampa snow-capped mountain.
We continue along the path toward the side of the Qayangate snow-capped mountain, a glacier-covered peak; at its foot, the colorful lagoons are a natural charm in the mountains, where the locals live by herding alpacas and llamas. It is a natural and cultural experience in the Andes of Peru. Then we descend to the lunch spot with a view of the Green Lagoon.
After lunch, we continue the descent until we reach the village of Pacchanta, the final point of our hike. Upon arriving in Pacchanta, you can enjoy hot springs (optional); we bid farewell to our trekking team, take our transportation to return to Cusco, and arrive at your hotel around 5:00 pm.
When planning your 2-Day / 1-Night Ausangate trek, it’s essential to carefully select what to bring due to the high altitude, cold climate, and rugged terrain. Here are some essential items to include in your packing list:
Thermal Clothing: Pack several layers of thermal clothing, such as base layers and insulating jackets (wool or down), along with accessories like a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf or neck gaiter.
Waterproofs: Don’t forget to include a waterproof jacket and pants to protect against rain and snow.
Sleeping Bag: Bring a sleeping bag designed to keep you warm in cold temperatures, preferably rated for low temperatures.
Proper Footwear: Ensure you have durable hiking boots that offer good ankle support and are comfortable for long distances.
Backpack: A sturdy and spacious backpack will be necessary to carry your gear, food, and water during the trek.
Lighting: Bring a flashlight or headlamp to light your way during the nights and early mornings.
Hydration: Stay hydrated at all times by carrying a water bottle or hydration system.
Sun Protection: Protect yourself from the strong Andean sun with sunscreen and sunglasses.
Trekking Poles: Trekking poles can be helpful for maintaining balance and stability on difficult terrain.
We will provide you with a duffel bag to store items you won’t need during the daily trek. The pack horses will carry this duffel bag, but make sure it weighs no more than 8 kg, including the sleeping bag and inflatable mattress.
It is crucial to be well-acclimated to the altitude before undertaking a trek. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before your trek begins to help acclimate and avoid potential altitude sickness during the hike. If you have already been in another high-altitude area in Peru before arriving in Cusco, we still recommend spending a full day in Cusco to rest, recover from your journey, and enjoy the sights.
Cusco’s airport currently operates only national flights. International passengers must disembark in Lima and go through customs. Note that due to Cusco’s high altitude, flights may experience delays or cancellations. Additionally, weather changes can affect air traffic. If you prefer a land alternative, buses are a viable option, although the journey can be long, especially from Lima. Buses from Lima can take approximately 20 hours.
Ausangate Adventure can pick you up from your hotel, provided it is located in the Historic Center of Cusco. During the briefing, your guide will coordinate the pick-up time, but please be aware that wait times can vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to local traffic. Cusco has narrow, cobblestone streets that may make it challenging to access some hotels and Airbnbs. Some locations might be in areas without vehicular access or on steep inclines, complicating luggage transport. It is advisable to book accommodation with easy access to facilitate transportation.
You can securely leave any additional luggage in Cusco, either at your hotel or with us at Ausangate Adventure while you are on your trek. We will store your luggage in the morning before your trek starts and return it to you once you are back in Cusco. Ensure your bags are clearly labeled to facilitate identification.
Altitude sickness occurs when there is less oxygen available in the air at high altitudes, such as at Ausangate. It can affect travelers regardless of age, gender, or physical condition. Common symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. While it may resolve quickly for some, it can persist for several days if not treated properly. We recommend the following to reduce the likelihood and severity of altitude sickness:
Before starting your trip, it is advisable to consult with your doctor. They may recommend taking acetazolamide (Diamox), a medication that can help reduce symptoms if taken one or two days before starting the trip.
Stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and during your stay. Some people find nasal saline solutions (drops or sprays) beneficial.
Upon arrival, take it easy and allow your body to adjust by resting for 10 to 15 minutes. Try to rest as much as possible during the trip, as excessive exertion can worsen symptoms.
Before going to high-altitude areas, it is advisable to follow a light diet. Opt for easily digestible foods such as fish, chicken, and hot soups. Avoid fatty foods, beef, lamb, and caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
Coca tea, mint tea, and muña tea can help alleviate symptoms.
Using oxygen properly will be beneficial for your recovery.
The climate in the Ausangate region is extremely variable. It can start off favorable but change quickly. Nights are usually cold, with average temperatures around -10°C, while daytime temperatures range between 18°C and 25°C. Cold winds are constant, and rain or snow can occur at any time. Despite these unpredictable conditions, the 2-day trek to Ausangate will be an unforgettable experience. It is essential to be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear for various weather conditions and to maintain a positive attitude and adaptability to changes.
Each guide from Ausangate Adventure is trained in first aid. They will carry a first aid kit and oxygen during the trek for basic medical situations. They will take good care of you. In case something unexpected happens and you are unable to complete the trek, they will determine the safest and quickest way to get you off the trail and to a clinic in Cusco.
All meals and snacks will be provided throughout the trek, up to the last lunch on the Ausangate trek. We understand you may be concerned about the quality of our food. Each meal is prepared by a chef in a small tent using a portable stove. Our customers are satisfied with the excellence of our dishes. Each chef is professionally trained to prepare the best breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. At the end of each trekking day, a delicious dinner awaits you, cooked in the heart of the Andes, which will surely exceed your expectations regarding the trek’s food.
We use fresh ingredients sourced from Cusco’s market and transported by pack horses guided by our muleteers. These ingredients are then prepared by our chefs to ensure each dish is fresh, healthy, and delicious.
Do you have special dietary needs? Don’t worry, we are prepared to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, and people with food allergies.
Ausangate Adventure will ensure water is available at each meal. The water will be boiled, purified, and cooled before serving to ensure it is safe to drink. However, for the first morning of the trek, you need to provide your own water due to the preparation process. It is advisable to start the trek with 2-3 liters of water, so ensure you have a sufficiently large bottle or a hydration system.
At Ausangate Adventure, we use biodegradable soap and ensure all our waste is taken back to Cusco. Our muleteers are trained to keep the trails clean and collect trash. We are committed to preserving and conserving our environment by managing waste responsibly. We adopt practices that minimize our environmental impact.
Protests and strikes are common in Peru and may affect our travel plans. Roads may be blocked, and trains may be halted. However, we will do our best to maintain your original itinerary, even if it means departing a night earlier. In some cases, trips may be canceled. If there are changes, our operations team will contact you. Your safety is our top priority, and we will take the best measures to protect you in any unforeseen situation.
Please take special care of your belongings and ensure you collect everything when leaving our vehicles, campsites, or restaurants. You are responsible for your personal items during the trek.
